Competition Team Updates

On Sat, March 31st we had our first official BJJ competition team tryouts!

After a solid couple months, with a small number of athletes competing at the Boston BJJ tournament and the U.S. Adu Dhabi trials, we are ready to ramp up our training as a TEAM for the next tournament season.

We had a great, intense tryout with a packed house and have some very promising “new blood” looking to take it to the next level with the comp team. The future looks very bright!

Youth In-House Tournament A Huge Success!

Congratulations to all the kids who participated in our in-house youth grappling tournament Saturday the 24th! There was some amazing jiu-jitsu on the mat – not to mention impeccable sportsmanship from each and every one of the kids who competed.

The feedback from the event was amazing, so much so we are seriously thinking of doing another one before next year. All of the staff and coaches are really proud of everyone.

Thanks very much to all who came and supported, and especially to Ryan Parker (guest professional referee) and our coaches and staff for a great job!

New Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Belt Promotions / Big Muay Thai Promotion

Big congrats to Jason Dwyer and Peter Luciani on their very well-deserved promotions to BJJ Blue Belt.

Also, we had another big Muay Thai promotion, with Kevin Rose only the third student to attain his Level 8 (brown belt) in the program!

Technique of the Month

This month, Master Steve (with Jim Manning and his “modern art” gi look) shows a very effective counter to the Leg Hug pass, where an opponent has both of your knees and thighs pinched together. This is a classic wrestler’s switch applied to BJJ.

West Coast Trip & New Projects On the Way

Next week, Master Steve is heading out West to teach as a featured instructor at the SBG International training camp in Kalispell, Montana. During the trip he will be working on another upcoming project (still hush-hush for now), then heading back to Las Vegas again to work with some of the top MMA school owners and black belts in the country.

Also on the way, look for his two new Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructional series (one of them shot with the great Matt Thornton). These promise to raise the bar again in terms of technique, strategy and training methods!

New – Morning Martial Arts Classes!

Great news…. by request, we now have adult martial arts classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:00 AM!

If interested, please contact Megan@nexusma.com or call 508-295-5427.

Martial Arts Training for Men and Women over 40

Martial Arts Training Over 40??? Neal Eric 300x199 Martial Arts Training for Men and Women over 40

Yes! At Nexus Martial Arts & Fitness we have students who not only participate in self-defense, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, kickboxing and mixed martial arts training over 40 – but even students in their 50s and 60s who enjoy training.

One of the biggest misconceptions in what we do is that it is only for kids or the young and athletically gifted. This couldn’t be further from the truth! The fact of the matter is, people doing martial arts training over 40 years of age want the same things as everyone else… they want to gain certain mental and physical benefits and not be bored stiff by monotonous health club workouts.

At Nexus, students participating in martial arts training over 40 also have the unique opportunity to learn directly from Master Instructor, Stephen Whittier, creator of the internationally renowned 40 Plus BJJ Success Brazilian jiu-jitsu series and the premier expert on functional martial arts performance coaching for athletes 40 and over.

Nexus students can rest assured that (unlike the experience at many mixed martial arts gyms) they will never be just “thrown to the wolves” to get worked over by the young tough guys. We have a fun, friendly and professional atmosphere, with separate training for our most advanced students and competition teams.

We got this very cool testimonial from James Malinchak – he’s a best-selling author, 2x College Speaker of the Year, appeared on ABC’s ‘Secret Millionaire,’ and is a HUGE fan of the UFC and martial arts in general!

See what he has to say about Nexus and how we change our students lives for the better!

Muay Thai Kickboxing Classes:
Integrating Long and Close Range Strikes

This week Nexus Martial Arts & Fitness in Wareham, MA the school one again hosted its Sityodtong Muay Thai Training Camp with USA Director Mark DellaGrotte (assisted by Nexus owner, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt, Sityodtong Muay Thai trainer and MMA coach, Stephen Whittier).

Untitled from Steve whittier on Vimeo.

During the camp, DellaGrotte worked with Nexus students of all experience levels from beginner to advanced, sharing core concepts and training philosophies that underlie and of the specific combinations or techniques he shared in the series of classes.

In the most recent Kickboxing Classes in Wareham, DellaGrotte and Whittier illustrated the concepts of:

1) Effectively integrating long range Muay Thai strikes (punches and kicks) with close range, or “infighting” weapons (elbows and knees);

2) Alternating the tempo and speed of single strikes and combination strikes; and finally,

3) Varying levels of attack (high, medium and low) levels.

All of this curriculum is geared not only to the offensive partner, but also to the trainers, or partners holding pads for the striker or assisting in specific partner drills to isolate the techniques and combinations being worked on in class. The trainer’s job is a specialized skill in itself, as the trainer must understand the proper distancing, timing, and angle for holding the pads so that they realistically mimic the distance, timing and angle of an actual kickboxing match or sparring session.

In this week’s video lesson taken from the class, Kru (Thai title for instructor) DellaGrotte talks through a combination series as Kru Whittier demonstrates:

First a single long “power jab” (straight lead hand strike) followed by a single cross (straight rear hand strike); then a fast “one-two” jab/cross combination followed by a powerful mid-level rear Thai kick.

Once the class combines these strikes with the correct hold, mechanics – and is able to do so off of the proper Thai-style rhythm and footwork – they then add the close range tools to the above combination.

Following the punches and Thai kick, they add the rear arm horizontal elbow strike, then the rear knee (unattached).

Unlike many kickboxing classes, the Nexus Martial Arts & Fitness / Sityodtong kickboxing classes system always takes the specific concepts and tools and integrates them live during the same class period, providing a smooth transition from form (the rote technique) to application (the technique in live application). This is where the fun really begins.

The other benefit of this specialized training approach is that it can be scaled in intensity to meet the needs of various classes, experience levels, age groups, etc…. without “watering down” the technique. Whereas the live drilling and sparring tends toward medium-to-heavy contact in some competition prep classes, timing and application can also be incorporated at a much “lighter” contact level, allowing beginner or hobbyist students to train and apply their technique in real time without the fear of harder contact or injury.

Nexus at NAGA New England Grappling Championships

Nexus at NAGA New England Grappling Championships

The Nexus Martial Arts & Fitness competition team’s youth and adult members put in another great performance at last weekend’s (North American Grappling Association) NAGA New England Grappling Championships.

The hard work and effort during our exclusive competition team practices were clearly displayed by the results of our students.  We had a range of competitors on our small team, from first time youth competitors to several veterans and current adult champions who were intent on keeping their winning streaks going.

We were especially proud our youth competitors, this being many students’ first competition or first time competing in higher divisions.  Nearly all of our junior students placed in the top three, and many received gold medals in both their Gi and No Gi divisions. This can be accredited to the diligent effort put in by everyone leading up to the tournament, including participating in extra classes as well as strength and conditioning training.

In one standout performance at NAGA New England, Logan Grajales, a twelve year-old Nexus student, dominated both his Gi and No Gi divisions without having a single point scored against him. Also winning another Championship belts were Davy Appleton, Madeline Hartley, and William Paling, among other gold, silver and bronze medals.

And it was not only the kids who displayed impressive skills at the tournament, we are also very proud of the technique and skill displayed by all of our adult competitors.  Nexus competitors were seen on scorecards all over the NAGA New England tournament from novice to expert levels, with nearly everyone getting a medal.  A special note was competition team captain John Murphy’s performance; John swept both his Purple belt Gi and Expert No Gi divisions once again.

Although the official results aren’t in yet and we were one of the smaller teams among a reported 1100 registered competitors, we are confident that we will once again place amongst the top teams in the Northeast. At the last regional NAGA (held in Oct 2011), Team Nexus scored first place in the overall team rankings, and third place overall for youth divisions. In order to represent Nexus in competition at NAGA New England and other tournaments, we ensure all competitors are part of our competition team and commit to personal standards for dedication and conduct. To be part of our competition team you have to have trained for a certain time period, show good attitude, as well as attend competition team classes at least several times per week to make sure everyone is as mentally and physically prepared as possible.

Everyone is constantly improving and working on their technical games, focusing their attention to competition even more. All this hard work is paying off, and everyone on the Nexus team can’t wait until the next tournament to keep up this winning streak!
